Waiohika is one of the finest outdoor venues in the country. Last year Rhythm and Vines used Waiohika to hold their 9th New Year's three day festival to a sell out audience of 25,000.
The name Waiohika is given to the general area around the homestead & Poverty Bay flats and means the place where Hika (a Maori chief) drew water from natural springs which today also supply Waiohika with abundant water.
This year, Waiohika and its two large natural grass amphitheatres will host the 2011 Gisborne Wine & Food Festival. The larger “Rhythm” amphitheatre will be used all day from 12.30pm to showcase the extensive range of local wine, beer and food exhibitors, as well as a full line-up of entertainment on the main stage. Then, come 7.30pm the focus shifts to the “Vines” amphitheatre where the Rugby World Cup Final will be screened live on a gigantic 8.4m x 5m LED outdoor screen.
